Got my Tarot cards today. I wish they weren't so damn glossy. They slide around everywhere. I'll take the time after the novel's done, but before the revision, to learn the ins and outs of how readings are done. So I could get the order over $25 to get the free shipping, I also got another book. This time it's The King's Last Song by Geoff Ryman that is about the last great king of Cambodia. I enjoyed both the Child Garden and Lust, though they had decidedly more sciency bents to them, but I also have enjoyed historical fiction the few times I've read it (most notably Umberto Eco's Foucault's Pendulum and The Name of the Rose; I'm not sure that Dan Brown counts, but I'll throw that in there, too). I'm reading the Jungle Books right now so the book was just added to the stack. The contents of the stack?
The Bible (still putting off reading that)
Elric Stealer of Souls Vol 1 (Moorcock)
The King's Last Song (Ryman)
The Wheel of Darkness (Preston and Child)
The Eyre Affair (Fforde - borrowed from Angela, keep forgetting to read it)
The Bottomless Bellybutton (Shaw -it's a tome of a graphic novel and keeps scaring me away)
The Gormenghast trilogy (Peake - also a tome)
Water for Elephants (Gruen)
Pretty Monsters (Link - I keep picking this up and reading a story at a time, so I'm actually currently reading this one, I guess)
Three issues of Asimov's that I haven't touched
One issue of Fantasy and Science Fiction that has one story that I haven't read yet
An issue of Weird Tales and a bunch of Believer issues
Either I have to be more diligent about reading when I'm not otherwise preoccupied, or I need to stop buying books. Heh. I think the former is a better option for me.
I've sat down to do some writing before the new episode of Top Chef comes on tonight at 10 (or is it 9?) I'm up to 38k and I'm supposed to be at 43k by the end of tonight. I'm going to take it a little easy and only shoot for 3k and maybe wake up early tomorrow to do some writing before going over to Angela's for Thanksgiving around 5. Time's winding down and I'm getting a little nervous. I'll never forgive myself if I can't get to 50k by Sunday at midnight. After yesterday's work, I still have to write 3k a day to get there. I can do that, provided I do some work tomorrow and work my ass off on Friday and the weekend.
There's no way this novel will wrap up in 12k, so it's definitely going to carry over into December. While I won't be so Nazi-esque about my daily word count (as long as I write something every day), I do want to shoot for 30k next month, so I'll be removing the NaNo counter and adding a monthly 30k counter just to keep myself on track. And once this novel's done? That means that I need to do 30k of writing other shit (short stories, scripts, etc.). But I'm shooting for the novel to be done by early January if I keep plugging away (aiming for another 40-60k to tack on).
Alright. Let me calmly write 3k tonight. Please.
